The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has detained a Russian agent in the Donetsk region who was coordinating rocket, bomb, and artillery strikes on Ukrainian Defense Forces positions in the Pokrovsk sector, according to Ukrinform.

The agent’s primary targets were areas with high concentrations of Ukrainian personnel and military equipment.

To gather intelligence, the FSB deployed a "sleeper agent", later identified as a 39-year-old repeat offender with a history of robbery convictions.

Recruited in Prison

While serving time in a prison colony in Russian-occupied Makiivka, the suspect was recruited by an FSB officer and placed on standby.

Following his release, he relocated to Bilozersk in the Pokrovsky District, settling with his partner in Ukrainian-controlled territory.

In late 2024, his Russian handler reactivated him, instructing him to monitor and report on Ukrainian military movements.

To collect intelligence, the agent traveled near frontline areas, covertly observing Defense Force positions.

After conducting reconnaissance missions, he transmitted reports to the FSB using an anonymous chat in a secure messaging app.

Arrest and Charges

Ukrainian law enforcement swiftly identified and detained the agent at his residence, simultaneously implementing measures to secure Ukrainian military positions in the region.

A search of his home uncovered a mobile phone and specialized communication devices used for transmitting intelligence to the FSB.

The suspect has been formally charged under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law).

He remains in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

As previously reported by Ukrinform, a Russian agent in Kirovohrad was caught attempting to install a GPS tracker on Ukrainian military equipment.
