In a recent analysis, Ukrainian aviation expert Konstantin Kryvolap provided insights into the current status of Russia's Su-34 bombers, a crucial asset in Moscow's aerial arsenal.

Carry and Drop Glide bombs

According to Tech these tactical bombers, known for their formidable capabilities, have significantly impacted Ukrainian forces. Kryvolap's assessment sheds light on how many of these aircraft may still be operational and the challenges they pose.

The Su-34, often hailed as the backbone of the Russian Air Force, has been widely deployed since its development in the 1990s. This bomber is renowned for its ability to carry and drop glide bombs, including the KAB series, which have been dubbed "the Russians' wonder weapon."

Ukrainian forces have identified these as major threats, anticipated to be countered effectively only by advanced aircraft like the F-16.

Influx of New Aircrafts

According to Kryvolap, Ukrainian efforts have successfully neutralized many Su-34s. Recent strikes on Russian airfields in Lipetsk and Morozovsk, where Su-34s were stationed, have contributed to these losses.

Despite these successes, Russia's substantial reserves and the influx of new aircraft have enabled them to replenish their fleet.

Kryvolap estimates that over 30 Su-34s have been hit, with approximately 80 still operational. The remainder of the fleet is either damaged or under repair, marking a significant setback for Russia.

The Su-34, with its length of over 23 meters and dual AŁ-31F M1 engines, is capable of speeds up to 1900 km/h and a range of about 4,000 km. It carries a variety of munitions, including bombs and missiles, making it a versatile and dangerous opponent.

Kryvolap also highlighted key Russian targets under Ukrainian attack, including oil and gas facilities, air defense systems, and airports. The primary goal is to push the Su-34s away from Ukrainian borders, ensuring that their pilots face severe operational constraints.
