The city, located on the frontline in the Kharkiv region, has become a focal point in recent months.
Russian troops infiltrated the northern industrial outskirts of the city, catching Ukrainian defenders off guard, according to Hotnews.
The attack began with Russian armored vehicles advancing several kilometers from their initial positions.
Troops disguised in Ukrainian uniforms entered the city, making their way into the suburbs and industrial areas. The Ukrainian 114th Territorial Defense Brigade and nearby units were unprepared for such tactics.
Drones Neutralized Infiltrating Troops
Ukrainian forces quickly responded. Drones targeted and neutralized many of the infiltrating Russian troops. However, the surprise nature of the attack left Ukrainian defenders shaken.
"They entered partially into the suburbs and were destroyed by our troops," said a military administrator in Kupiansk. Russian forces used heavy armored vehicles and attempted to bring in infantry.
Reports from the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies highlighted the unusual approach. Russian troops, disguised in Ukrainian uniforms, managed to bypass defenses. This raised serious concerns among the defenders.
The assault is part of a larger shift in dynamics around Kupiansk.
Earlier in the year, Ukrainian forces easily repelled small Russian attacks. But in recent months, Russian troops have become more coordinated and motivated. Analysts suggest this increased aggression may be tied to political goals.
Vladimir Putin is believed to be pressuring his forces to secure territory before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. Moscow anticipates that Trump may push Ukraine to accept a ceasefire that favors Russia.
Kupiansk remains contested. While Ukrainian forces successfully repelled the attack, ISW warns that Russian advances in the region could have significant operational consequences.
For now, Kupiansk stands as a key point of tension in the ongoing conflict.
