Ukrainian soldiers from the 2nd Mechanized Battalion K-2 of the 54th Mechanized Brigade recently captured a rare Russian T-90S tank near the frontlines.
High-Tech Equipment
Named after the 17th-century Ukrainian independence leader Hetman Ivan Mazepa, this elite brigade took possession of the T-90S, an export variant of the T-90 main battle tank (MBT), found in near-perfect condition.
According to Defense Express and Digi24, the tank was equipped with high-tech additions, including an anti-drone grill, electronic countermeasures, surveillance cameras, and an improvised mine net.
Tank crew member Oleksandr Afanasiev shared footage of the capture on Instagram. Military researcher Andrii Tarasenko noted on Telegram that the T-90S differs from Russia’s domestic T-90A primarily in its armor.
Made for Export
It features a distinct “Indian” trapezoidal block of explosive reactive armor (ERA) instead of the standard Shtora infrared jamming system, indicating the tank was designed for export.
Inside, labels are in English, further confirming its export orientation.
The T-90S, produced by Uralvagonzavod, is commonly operated by India and comes armed with a 125mm 2A46M smoothbore gun capable of firing anti-tank missiles and various shells, reaching targets up to 5 kilometers away.
Additional armaments include a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun and a 12.7mm anti-aircraft gun, providing flexibility against ground and low-flying targets.
Powered by a V-92S2 1,000-horsepower engine, it can reach speeds of 37 mph and travel up to 340 miles with additional fuel.
