Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has reportedly offered $97.4 billion to acquire OpenAI, the company behind the widely used ChatGPT chatbot, according to CNN and Ukrinform.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, later distanced himself from the company amid disagreements over its commercialization. He has since been embroiled in legal disputes with CEO Sam Altman, accusing OpenAI of misrepresenting itself as a nonprofit and violating its founding principles by prioritizing profits.

Despite Musk’s massive offer, Altman quickly dismissed the proposal, responding on social media: “No thanks, but we’ll buy (social network) X for $9.74 billion if you want.”

OpenAI operates under a nonprofit umbrella that oversees the for-profit subsidiary OpenAI LP, which has rapidly grown into a nearly $100 billion company, with Altman playing a key role in its success.

Meanwhile, OpenAI continues to advance its AI technology, recently unveiling a new AI agent capable of conducting in-depth research within ChatGPT.
