Hezbollah's Shura Council has elected Hashem Safi al-Din, the cousin of the late Hassan Nasrallah, as the new leader of the militant group.

The decision follows Nasrallah's death on September 27 during an Israeli attack on Hezbollah's central headquarters, as reported by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and confirmed by the group.

This was reported by El Balad and Al Arabiya.

Sixty-year-old Safi al-Din previously headed Hezbollah’s executive committee, overseeing the group's financial operations.

He was also one of the organization's founding members and has been on the U.S. and Saudi Arabia’s list of wanted terrorists since 2017.

The new leader is known for his close ties to Iran, being the son-in-law of the late Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike.

Media reports note that Safi al-Din bears a striking resemblance to his predecessor Nasrallah, not only in appearance but also in his leadership style.
