Attack drones targeted a Russian military base and defense facility in Kaspiysk, Dagestan, on October 31, marking a rare drone strike deep within Russian territory.
According to reports from local news outlet Astra, multiple drones struck near a military installation within the city. One drone reportedly hit the military base directly, while another was intercepted.
Video footage from local residents shows an explosion on the ground, suggesting a successful impact.
Dagestan's local officials and city representatives confirmed the attack and announced an investigation into the incident. The head of Dagestan stated that steps were being taken to understand the scope and source of the drone strike.
The drones targeted the Kaspiysk naval base, which hosts Kalibr missile carriers used for Russia’s missile operations in Ukraine. Located roughly 1,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, the attack highlights a striking expansion in the range of drone capabilities.
Russian media outlets report that these drones can fly as far as 3,000 kilometers, underscoring a potentially significant reach for future aerial strikes.
Earlier in the day, another drone strike targeted a Russian-held seaport in Berdyansk, Zaporizhzhia. Russian forces reportedly closed off streets near the port in response, and locals claimed on social media that more than six drones had been involved in the attack.
The recent incidents signal a notable escalation in the use of long-range drones, further highlighting vulnerabilities at strategic Russian military sites.
