TikTok is taking new steps to make its platform safer for young users in.

The social media giant, with over 175 million users across the European continent, is introducing stricter controls on beauty filters for minors.

These changes are part of a broader effort to address concerns about identity, mental health, and online safety.

In the coming weeks, TikTok will block users under 18 from accessing beauty filters designed to enhance physical appearance, according to El Economista.

These filters, which smooth skin, elongate lashes, or slim facial features, can negatively impact how teenagers perceive themselves.

The company said the decision was influenced by a study from Internet Matters, a UK organization focused on online safety. The report found that these filters often distort reality, leading young users to struggle with their self-image.

Fun Filters Will Stay

TikTok has clarified that fun filters, like those adding animal ears or playful effects, will still be available for minors. The platform will also start showing more information about how filters can change someone’s appearance.

Developers who create filters using TikTok Effects House will receive updated guidelines to ensure their designs do not unintentionally harm users.

Another new feature aims to provide support for users who encounter harmful content. TikTok will connect users in 13 European countries with local helplines if they report content related to suicide, self-harm, harassment, or hate.

These partnerships include organizations like SpunOut in Ireland, Nummergegen Kummer in Germany, and Bris in Sweden. The goal is to offer free psychological help and advice through trusted local resources.

To further protect younger audiences, TikTok is testing new technology to identify accounts belonging to users under the age of 13.

This machine learning system will flag suspicious accounts for review by specially trained moderators. Accounts found to be in violation will be removed.

TikTok already deletes about 6 million accounts monthly worldwide for not meeting age requirements.
