Russia’s invasion of Ukraine sent shockwaves around the world. But behind the scenes, the situation was even more alarming than many realized.
Anton, a former Russian officer, has come forward to reveal what it was like inside one of Russia’s secret nuclear bases as the conflict began, according to El Economista.
His account sheds light on the readiness of Vladimir Putin’s nuclear arsenal and the intense environment inside these highly secure facilities.
Anton, whose identity is protected for his safety, spoke to the BBC from a location outside Russia. He was part of a unit responsible for the Kremlin’s nuclear weapons.
Before the invasion, their work mainly involved routine drills. Everything changed when Russian forces crossed into Ukraine.
According to Anton, his unit was immediately placed on high alert. “The day the war started, the weapons were fully prepared,” he said. “We were ready to launch at sea, in the air, and even to carry out a nuclear strike if needed.”
Three Days After Invasion
The decision to escalate the readiness of nuclear forces came just three days after the invasion began. Putin ordered Russia’s nuclear deterrent into what he called a “special mode of combat service.”
Anton described how life on the base quickly became more restricted. Access was cut off even for family members. Phones were banned, and soldiers were kept under strict surveillance.
Anton said the soldiers in his unit were carefully chosen and regularly tested, including with lie detector exams. Their response time for emergencies was two minutes.
The tension inside the base only grew as the war continued. Anton also revealed that he was ordered to spread false claims about Ukrainian civilians being combatants.
He refused and was punished by being sent to the front lines.
Eventually, Anton decided to desert with help from an organization that supports those opposing the war. He now lives in hiding, fearing retribution from Russian authorities.
Anton’s story is part of a larger wave of military defections. Thousands of Russian soldiers have deserted since the war began.
Like Anton, many hope to share the truth about what they experienced and the toll the conflict has taken on those forced to fight.
