As Moldova approaches its presidential elections on October 20, 2024, reports have emerged that local clergy are making pilgrimages to Moscow, funded by the Russian Patriarchate.

Standard Pilgramage

The Metropolitan Church of Moldova confirmed these visits, likening them to traditional pilgrimages to holy sites in Israel or Greece. However, concerns have been raised about the political implications of these trips.

In late August, several clergy members were spotted at Chisinau Airport, and more visits are planned for this month.

Vicar Ioan Moșneguțu of the Metropolitan Church stated that these trips are standard pilgrimage practices, where priests visit monasteries and engage in discussions with professors at the Moscow Orthodox Theological Academy. He emphasized that these trips should not be viewed as politically motivated.

Expenses Covered by Russia

Moșneguțu acknowledged that the costs for these trips are indeed covered by the Russian Patriarchate, asserting that “the authenticity of the pilgrimage spirit must be preserved.”

Despite the Church's position, critics argue that the links between Moldovan clergy and Russian authorities are troubling. Historian Anatol Petrencu highlighted that the Metropolitan leadership has not publicly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He noted that the ongoing visits show a connection that should be curtailed, especially given the Church's vocal support for the Kremlin’s actions.

Calls for action have surfaced, with Moldovan MP Vasile Șoimaru suggesting that the church affiliated with the Moscow Patriarchate could be banned.

This proposal echoes the situation in Ukraine, where there are separate Orthodox branches. However, President Maia Sandu has assured that there is no imminent threat to any of the religious organizations in Moldova.
