On September 19, Russian forces attacked a retirement home in the city of Sumy, killing one person and injuring at least 12 others, according to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry.

The facility housed 211 elderly residents, and two floors of the building were partially destroyed in the attack.

Fortunately, no one remains trapped under the rubble, and 147 residents have been evacuated.

Sumy Governor Volodymyr Artiukh said on national television that the displaced residents are being moved to new locations and are receiving necessary medical and psychological assistance.

"The attack happened in the afternoon while people were having lunch or resting, leaving them in shock," he added.

This assault is part of Russia's intensified attacks on Sumy Oblast, which border Russia.

The escalation is seen as a response to Ukraine’s military success in the Kursk operation, launched in early August.

Ukrainian authorities are now preparing to evacuate around 45,000 people from the region due to the heightened threat.

President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that the Kursk incursion has played a critical role in preventing the occupation of Sumy Oblast and its regional center, the city of Sumy.

The situation remains tense as Ukrainian forces continue efforts to defend the area.
