Latvia's Ministry of Defense has announced it will transfer British-made CVR(T) armored vehicles to Ukraine to support the country’s defense efforts in the ongoing war with Russia.
For operational security reasons, the exact number of vehicles being sent has not been disclosed.
As reported by Delfi, the Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds confirmed that Latvia is in the final stages of procuring new infantry fighting vehicles to replace the CVR(T) fleet.
Known for their versatility and maneuverability, the CVR(T) vehicles have been a key component in tactical operations and are expected to play a crucial role in Ukraine's defense.
Latvia first signed a contract in 2014 for 123 CVR(T) vehicles, with 116 of them modernized. Another contract for additional equipment was signed with Britain in 2019.
As part of its broader defense support, Latvia pledged in 2023 to provide military aid to Ukraine totaling 0.25% of its GDP annually until 2026.
Versatile Combat Vehicles
The CVR(T) (Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked)) is a family of British armored vehicles developed in the mid-20th century.
They are recognized for their high maneuverability and ability to perform a wide range of missions, including reconnaissance, fire support, patrolling, and casualty evacuation.
In addition to the armored vehicles, Latvia has been actively supporting Ukraine through various means.
Recently, the country announced it would send computer equipment, specialized clothing, and binoculars to the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa also revealed that Latvia’s new military aid package will include drones and the training and equipping of thousands of additional Ukrainian soldiers.
