A Ukrainian man who disarmed a border patrol and stole weapons before illegally crossing into Romania has been arrested by the Sighetu Marmației Border Police.

Both Men Detained

According to Ziare the individual is one of two Ukrainian nationals who attacked and disarmed a border patrol in their home country before fleeing into Romanian territory.

The second man was also apprehended shortly after.

The two men were detained after crossing the border illegally into Romania. The first of the two was placed under preventive arrest for 30 days by the Negrești Oaș Court. According to local media, the arrested man, identified as S. Mykhailo, has reportedly requested political asylum.

Stolen Weapons Recovered

The Romanian authorities, in coordination with their Ukrainian counterparts, were alerted to the illegal border crossing and initiated a search operation.

The search, which initially involved six patrols totaling 12 border police officers, was later joined by additional police and gendarmerie units.

During the operation, the stolen weapons were recovered on Romanian soil. Among the recovered items was a Kalashnikov rifle, although the magazine and ammunition were found separately on the Ukrainian side of the border by Ukrainian border guards.

The investigation is ongoing under the direct supervision of the prosecutor from the Negrești Oaș Prosecutor's Office.
