In a significant escalation of the conflict, Ukrainian forces have reportedly struck the Olenya airbase in Russia, marking a noteworthy achievement in the ongoing war.

Lars Peder Haga, a professor at the Norwegian Air Force Academy, described the attack as an “impressive feat,” especially since it targeted a Tu-22M3 bomber, a valuable asset for the Russian military, according to Tech.

Historic Range Achievement

The attack on Olenya, located 1,800 kilometers (about 1,120 miles) from the Ukrainian border, represents a historic record for the Ukrainian military. Previously, the longest-range attacks had been around 1,200 kilometers (approximately 750 miles).

This new record showcases the advanced capabilities of Ukraine's military, with experts noting the significance of this achievement.

According to aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko, the distance covered by the Ukrainian strike is a dramatic increase from previous capabilities. He emphasized that the attack was inevitable due to the strategic importance of the Olenya base.

Precision and Advancements

Romanenko also highlighted the precision of the strike, which was reportedly carried out by a Ukrainian drone that directly hit the Tu-22M3 bomber.

This success underscores the advancements in Ukraine’s drone technology, particularly in target acquisition and guidance over such long distances. The expert noted that effective communication is challenging over 1,800 kilometers (1,120 miles), making the precision of the strike even more impressive.

The attack’s implications are significant, suggesting that Russian military assets are now vulnerable well beyond their own borders, potentially up to the Ural Mountains.

The Tu-22M3, produced by Tupolev, is equipped with powerful engines and has a range of 7,000 kilometers (about 4,350 miles), capable of carrying weaponry across the globe. Its variable-sweep wing design allows for greater speed and fuel efficiency, making it a formidable aircraft.
