Footage circulating on social media shows a Russian Shahed drone, one of Russia’s main weapons against Ukraine, accidentally crashing into a residential building in Belgorod.
Failed to Cross Into Ukraine
The incident reportedly took place on November 5 in this Russian region near the Ukrainian border.
According to Ukrainian sources, the drone failed to cross into Ukraine and instead hit the upper floors of the building, destroying the facade.
The Shahed drones, originally developed by Iran and rebranded as “Geran” by Russia, are known for their distinct delta-wing shape, according to Digi24.
These drones are classified as loitering munitions, or “kamikaze” drones, meaning they are designed for one-way missions. Once they reach their target, they detonate upon impact.
Shahed-136 models, often used in the conflict, measure about 11 feet in length and have a wingspan of approximately 8 feet.
These drones can reach altitudes of up to 13,000 feet, although they often fly at lower altitudes to avoid detection by radar.
They are propelled by a simple gasoline engine, giving them a top speed of around 115 miles per hour.
Despite being relatively slow and loud, Shahed drones are difficult to intercept in large numbers, especially when used in coordinated swarms.
Shahed-136 drones can carry a warhead weighing between 66 and 88 pounds, usually loaded with high-explosive ammunition. Their range is estimated at around 1,200 miles, allowing them to strike deep into enemy territory.
