Singer Janet Jackson has recently stirred controversy following comments about Kamala Harris in an interview with The Guardian.
Heard That She Is Indian
When discussing the possibility of Harris becoming the first woman of color to serve as President of the United States, Jackson spread misinformation regarding Harris's racial background.
"You know what they say? She’s not really Black; I heard she’s Indian," Jackson stated, incorrectly referencing Harris's heritage, according to Ziare.
The backlash from fans was swift, with many expressing disappointment at Jackson for promoting false narratives just months before the presidential election.
Critics pointed out that Jackson had the opportunity to support a strong, proud woman of color but instead chose to perpetuate unfounded rumors. One social media user remarked, "It’s hard to see this from someone who has always been a fan."
Spread Misinformation
The claims about Harris’s background, which have often circulated in political discourse — particularly by Donald Trump — are unfounded. Harris is of Indian descent on her mother's side and Jamaican descent through her father, Donald J. Harris, who was born in Jamaica.
In response to the backlash, a statement attributed to a supposed manager of Jackson claimed that she wished to clarify her comments and acknowledged the misinformation.
It emphasized Jackson's respect for Harris’s dual heritage and her commitment to celebrating diversity. However, representatives later clarified that the individual making the statement was not authorized to speak on Jackson's behalf.
