German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall has officially launched its first weapons production facility in Ukraine, marking a significant step in bolstering Ukraine’s domestic defense capabilities.

Already Operational

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger confirmed the launch in an interview with Ukrainian news site TSN, as reported by EFE and Agerpres. According to Papperger, the plant is currently dedicated to maintaining infantry fighting vehicles and battle tanks and is expected to start manufacturing Lynx armored combat vehicles by the end of the year, according to Digi24.

“We have many strong plans. The first factory is already operational,” Papperger stated, explaining that the facility’s initial focus is on supporting Ukrainian military equipment through maintenance services. However, the addition of Lynx vehicle production marks a substantial shift toward local manufacturing.

The Lynx, known for its advanced mobility and modular design, will be the first ultra-modern infantry vehicle to be built in Ukraine, a move that strengthens Ukraine’s ability to supply its military with armored vehicles.

Enhance Self-Sufficiency

This factory launch is part of a larger joint venture between Rheinmetall and Ukraine, which Papperger described as “very profitable.” Under this arrangement, Rheinmetall holds a 51% controlling stake, giving the German company primary oversight while working in partnership with Ukrainian interests.

This collaboration is designed to enhance Ukraine’s self-sufficiency in arms production as it continues to defend against Russian aggression.

Beyond this initial facility, Rheinmetall has additional projects underway in Ukraine, including the construction of a gunpowder production plant and a separate ammunition factory. These efforts reflect Rheinmetall’s commitment to creating a more resilient supply chain for Ukraine’s military.

“Our third objective is to establish air defense system production to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself,” Papperger added, underscoring the comprehensive scope of Rheinmetall’s strategy in Ukraine.
