Russia is set to supply advanced air defense systems to Iran, potentially increasing the already high stakes in the region.

The Primary Source for These Advanced Systems

According to Tech Iran, infuriated by recent Israeli strikes that eliminated Hamas leader Yehya Sinwar and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr, is seeking to bolster its defense capabilities.

The Iranian government perceives a need for more robust systems to counter potential Israeli retaliation, which could mirror the April 2024 rocket and drone attacks.

Russia, with its extensive military technology, stands as the primary source for these advanced systems. The potential delivery includes components from the S-300 and S-400 Triumph systems, renowned for their long-range capabilities.

Known for High Mobility

The S-300 system, known for its high mobility and rapid deployment—achieving combat readiness in just five minutes—has been a critical asset in Iran’s defense arsenal. It is effective against aerial targets up to 150 kilometers away and can engage ballistic missiles within 40 kilometers.

However, its reliance on semi-active radar guidance can limit its effectiveness against multiple targets from different directions.

On the other hand, the S-400 Triumph offers enhanced capabilities with its 40N6 missiles, extending engagement ranges up to 400 kilometers for aircraft.

Despite its advanced features, recent conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, have highlighted some limitations of these systems, particularly in countering certain modern ballistic missiles like the MGM-140 ATACMS.
