Some Ukrainian soldiers have expressed strong opposition to any peace deal with Russia, warning it could lead to a coup.
Our Blood has Been Spilled
According to reports from The Washington Post and Lenta, many within Ukraine’s armed forces (VSU) feel that too much blood has been shed to accept any form of negotiated peace that could cede Ukrainian territory to Russia.
Veronika, a military medic, voiced her frustrations, stating:
“A coup will happen because those pushing for peace are in safe cities. No one here will support it — our blood has been spilled on this land."
Her sentiments reflect a broader dissatisfaction among Ukrainian soldiers, many of whom see negotiations as futile, believing Russia cannot be trusted to uphold any agreements.
Refuses to Live Under Russian Rule
Pavel, a former miner and now a drone operator in the military, emphasized that losing the Donbas region would be catastrophic for Ukraine. He questioned whether a peace deal would truly bring an end to the conflict, fearing it could be just the beginning of further aggression.
Civilians share these concerns. Natalia, a 38-year-old woman from Sloviansk who lost her son in the battles for Avdiivka, said:
"Too many people have died because of this — it’s too late to talk about negotiations."
Like many others, she refuses to live under Russian rule, even if peace would offer material benefits.
Despite these views, some international and Russian officials doubt the likelihood of a military-led coup in Ukraine. They believe that if peace is ordered, the armed forces would follow commands to stop fighting.
